Review on πŸ“» HH50 Pocket Weather Radio by Midland by Jon Joung

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Compact and perfect for emergency kits

I have an Eton emergency weather radio with built in NOAA warning system and an FRS radio with weather station capabilities, but I was looking for something smaller that would fit in my camping gear. After reading the reviews and seeing the low cost of the Midland HH50 I bought it to try. My first impression was surprised at how small this block is! It's smaller than the iPhone (though not as thin) and fits in the palm of your hand. The included strap and belt clip add functionality and utility on the go, which is perfect. The device is very easy to use. You have two settings (on or warning) and buttons for channel search and volume, and that's it. Turn on the device, wait a few seconds while it searches for a suitable band, and you're done. The volume is also very good for such a small device and can be adjusted as desired. The only thing to watch out for is the alarm setting, which will go off a wobbly (low to high) alarm whenever the National Weather Service issues an alert. or update. I have found that the volume of the actual alarm is tied to the volume of the radio. So if I listen to the radio at a low (low) volume, the alarm will also signal a low (low) volume. This can be a problem if you forget to turn up the volume and miss a warning or recommendation. I'll still have to play around with this to see if that's the case, but keep that in mind and "test" the alarm setting first if you're in a situation where you don't want to miss any notifications. It's not a huge issue in my opinion, but it just takes extra steps to make sure you test it to make sure the notifications are at a reasonable level. Overall I am very impressed and happy with this purchase and have stowed the unit in the mesh pocket of my hiking pack for easy access if the weather changes or just to get an update on the conditions before heading out receive.
