Review on Rivet Insert Nutsert Plated Carbon Hardware by Eric Smalley

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good product, difficult to install

I had stripped threads on the aluminum bracket that holds the stabilizers to the bottom of my Airstream caravan. These mounts are quite flimsy and drilling/threading would mean using a larger bolt that will not fit in the stabilizer holes. I was told to use strong nuts. The measurements given in the description were incorrect and I reported it. The hole should be closer to 1/2 inch. It's best if the hole is large enough to fit a rivet nut if you don't have a nut tightening tool and plan to use a nut/bolt to expand it. the nut can't turn with the nut or it won't expand properly I used a bolt with a nut and 2 washers, oiled the washers to keep them from turning Union nut for the union nut end thread. Insert this into the hole and hand tighten the nut up to the flare nut. Hold the end of the bolt with a ratchet/bit to keep it from turning. Turn the nut clockwise with a box wrench (if you see the bolt turning with the nut, it's not working properly). Rivet nut and attach your metal with a new screw. I found it easier to understand the operation using a piece of flat metal in a vise on my workbench. I drilled a hole then put in a rivet and saw some problem. Make sure the bolt goes deep into the nut, otherwise it may work loose and get stuck in the nut. This works best with a socket wrench, but they cost about fifty dollars and I only had to use 3 rivets.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Requires a socket
