Dorman Crankshaft Sensor

I purchased this crankshaft sensor to replace the sensor in my 2000 Mercury Marquis which is 20 years old. which has 34,000 original miles on it, believe it or not. I have code PO 320 on the check engine light on the dash. After some research I realized it could be either a camshaft position sensor or a crankshaft position sensor so I bought both from Revain. On these vehicles, replacing the camshaft position sensor is easiest at the very front. Changed it and then took my OBDII reader and erased the code. I then started it and drove about 10 miles and still had the problem of the car wanting to stall like it originally did. A few days later I replaced the crankshaft sensor, which was a little tricky as you had to unbolt the air conditioning compressor and move it out of the way to replace the crankshaft sensor. Luckily I have a lift at my age. At almost 70 I wouldn't want to do this work on my back, but when I was young I didn't think twice about not doing it. When I was done again I cleared the PO320 code and drove the car another 10 miles and all seemed great. I have driven the car about 100 km since then and everything is fine. I find that the original camshaft sensor is still good at this point, but after 20 years I feel much more confident leaving both new sensors in the car. I will keep the original camshaft sensor either in the trunk or on a shelf in my shed in case I need it again and discard the original crankshaft sensor. I have a few other Ford vehicles that might be useful if the same problem occurs again and the same sensor is required. UPDATE: Dorman's crankshaft sensor failed and I had to buy another one. Now I'm on a second Dorman crankshaft sensor which has fixed the problem again, this time hopefully for a long time.

Pros

Cons
  • Operating Speed
