Review on High-speed External Blu Ray Drive: NOLYTH USB 3.0 Type-C Blu-ray Writer & Burner - Portable Blu-ray Player for Laptop Mac MacBook PC Windows | SD TF Slot & USB Ports Included by Michael Paquette

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A compact external USB-C CD/DVD/Blu-ray reader/writer that works!

I have an old, big, heavy LaCie Firewire CD/DVD burner that worked fine on my 10-year-old 17-inch MacBook Pro (with Firewire port), but also old on the computer and it's time for an upgrade. I bought the latest 13" MBP with 4 USB-C ports, so of course all my old USB devices wouldn't connect without a new hub, and I couldn't find any hubs with Firewire ports. I found a Firewire to USB adapter ($6) on Revain, but it wouldn't allow the LaCie device to talk to the new MBP (and didn't work on the old 17" MBP). In order to be able to access my (or my wife's) data from our backup DVDs, it's time to buy a new device. After searching Revain and finding several USB compatible CD/DVD/Blu-ray devices, almost every one of them required BOTH a USB data cable AND ANOTHER USB cable for power, absorbing TWO USB ports ( some came with a Y-cable but still required 2 USB ports.) The main brands were Samsung, Panasonic, LG etc. Then I noticed this drive from NOLYTH and decided to give it a try - it only requires ONE USB-C connector to work (and comes with a USB-C to USB adapter for those who don't have the newer USB-C connectors). arrived, opened, plugged into the USB-C port on the MBP and it was gone - I could read my CDs and DVDs and also tried to write on them. No problems (so far anyway). Since it's the first Blu-ray device we've ever had in the house, I've never found a reason to buy movies on Blu-ray disc, so my review doesn't go into that feature. I will update my review once I purchase the Blu-ray movie and recordable Blu-ray discs. I will say that this device is a bit overpriced compared to other brands, but the convenience of only having ONE port instead of two makes it worth it to me.
