They work properly by slipping the locking head onto the shank. You do NOT need to turn the key to lock the head. The head engages with a sufficiently firm latch that you can be sure it's locked (of course I always pull the head back to make sure...). Quality seems good (for such a simple part) - brushed stainless steel. Polyethylene foil on the head and polyethylene cap. At room temperature the cap seems to hold up. HOWEVER, after using it in the cold, the small hinge may break or the cap may crack - it would be so nice if they used silicone for these parts. Overall great product/value for money.
