I bought 2 x 500w for my 125g tank. One was used for over 1 year with another brand of heater, then I bought another after another brand of heater accidentally blew out while changing the water. (I forgot to turn off the heating). So now I'm using 2500 watts for my 125g at 86f. So far, it's good. I strongly recommend using 2300w or 2500w for an aquarium over 100g, especially in winter. The heater lasts longer. Otherwise, working alone can damage the heater more quickly because it's working too hard to keep the tank warm on its own.
