Review on Stay Warm and Sleep Soundly with WONTEX 100% Thermal Blackout Curtains for Bedroom - Beige, 42 x 84 inch, Set of 2 by Mark Fleming

Revainrating 3 out of 5

I macgyvered a fix for the top issue of letting the light in to make this a 5 star

I have 6 windows in my bedroom & bath area that I wanted to black out the light from - 2 large windows and 4 smaller windows. I bought the 2 of the 52x54 sets to use for my smaller windows, using 1 panel per window. For the 2 larger windows I bought 2 of the 52x63 sets - 1 set per window. Note that the blackout material does not go all the way to the bottom of the curtain - so you probably don’t want your curtains to just go down to your windowsill. The black inner material stops a couple of inches above the bottom.I bought the amazonBasics wraparound curtain rods - 28-48 for the smaller windows and 48-88 for the larger windows.A friend installed them for me - it took him about 2 hours to do all 6 windows. I then noticed that while the blackout curtains don‘t let light through the curtained area, there WAS quite a bit of light still coming in above the top of the curtains.I wondered if a strip of folded fabric laid across the top would get rid of the light and it did!I went to JoAnn fabrics and bought about 18 yards of their Comfy Cosy fleece solid fabric in black. The fabric is 43 inches wide. For each curtain I measured across the top of the curtain from end to end as it was hanging on the rod. I wanted it to go across the top with an overhang on each end (so no light at the ends), so I added 8 inches for each end. Thus for my 43 inch across the top window, I added 16 inches, for a total of 59 inches - basically 5 feet. I cut the flannel 5 feet. The flannel was already folded in half lengthwise (21.5 inches across). Leaving that fold in, I folded it again in thirds - so I ended up with a long strip about 7 inches across and 5 feet long. The 7 inches across is 6 layers - more than enough to block the top light!. I laid the strip across the top, bending up the fabric about 2 inches up the back wall, tucking it flat across the opening, and having an inch or 2 visible over the top front. I just let the ends hang down on the left and right.Does it look like a designer curtain, or one an interior designer would have put in? NO!But does it work? HECK YEAH!And thankfully Joann Fabrics had this fleece on sale for 1/2 price! Woo Hoo!

Pros
  • Curtains can be used year-round for maximum benefit
Cons
  • May not be suitable for large windows or sliding doors
