I bought these tires to replace a set of similar ones that had failed shortly after leaving the factory. They were going to use it to get around over the summer and maybe even the next winter, but they almost lost it when, in the middle of the night, they landed in a deep but narrow trench that the road's unfortunate repairers had left in the center of the road. A side chord break caused the entire sidewall to become lumpy and the tire to lose its structural integrity. The previous generation's tires have been criticized for having a very thin sidewall. I can confirm that it is shockingly weak for crossover-specific rubber. According to its advertised specs, this new generation of tire is stronger than its predecessor thanks to the replacement of rayon with polyester in the tread area and of a single rayon layer with two polyester layers along the sidewall. There have been no complaints about performance so far; the sidewall is sturdy. Maybe another component of the rubber composition was altered as well, but I was unable to confirm this.
