The smallest sensor area - allows you to work in hard-to-reach places and read small objects!

I was looking for an IR thermometer with the smallest sensor that fits in a small space. In particular, I wanted to be able to capture the temperature of individual surface mount components on a PCB, even when they are very close to other parts. Most of these inexpensive IR thermometers end up being quite clunky (overkill) at the end of the reading, making it hard to guess which component the instrument is actually "seeing". This one has the smallest tip I could find so you can get closer and it seems to work fine. Holding down the measure button will show recent updates as you move, making it easier to find the hottest spot. Apart from a very expensive lab quality instrument with an IR camera it gives you what you need as you can find hotspots and compare to non-hotspots to get an accurate temperature difference (which is exactly what I want, so the absolute accuracy is not that critical). However, it also appears to be fairly accurate; So far I've only used it at room temperature and above (up to about 120'F). I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one of these. (To do this type of measurement, forget about the laser pointer, the parallax makes it completely useless.)

Pros
  • NON-CONTACT Thermometer
Cons
  • Unbelievable price
