Compare apples to apples and it's a mountain of apples

Ok I came back after owning them for a year to say they are 10 stars out of five. LAUGH OUT LOUD. They stay sharp when expensive knives need constant sharpening. Big Santoku is awesome. Each knife is used often. And when we have people who love to cook, they grab it within days. The fact that we can wash them in the dishwasher is an even bigger asset. Apart from my fryer, the best product I have bought for the kitchen. I would compare them to some of the best knives I own. -------------------------------- -----I've always liked trolls who comment stupidly on products. Let's all say these knives aren't as good as the ones that cost $200 a set. You need to know because YOU are stupid and we are SOOO smart. lol. Let's talk apples to apples. These knives come with a protective case for less than $5 a knife. I don't see a comparable knife at this price. No one. Even a cheap knife I bought at Walmart that I can't put in the dishwasher costs half that whole set. Knives are attractive when you open them. Colors are vibrant and this is great for identification. The scabbard is great when you pull it out of the drawer and when the younger one reaches for the drawer when you're not looking. Of course, be careful when it comes out of its sheath. They are razor sharp right out of the box. I'll see how stone sharpening will hold up over time. A piece of advice: never use a knife sharpening tool. They are all poorly made and will damage knives. No matter what kind of knife, use a commercially available stone. As for chips and stuff like that, well, I had them not long ago. I expect signs of wear from a cheap knife. But so far I've used them every day I've had them and they're great and cut through everything with ease. Even the carving is easy compared to some expensive knives I have. Shh don't tell the people who bought them for me. The little ones come in handy when you need a utility knife. A shorter paring knife would have been useful, but hey, five knives for the price is a good thing. The balance of the knives is a bit off because they are light. The handles are molded from acrylic, so they don't have the weight of large wooden-handled knives. However, health is good. The handles are comfortable to hold and the knives cut on contact so you don't slip and knock off an object that didn't cut as expected. After that, being able to throw it in the dishwasher is priceless. They shine like new. And if the carbon steel does get a little rusty, they might not be a showpiece, but they'll probably still be the knives to turn to when you need to get the job done fast and leave the Maytag clean. ------- ------To update. I would raise it to six stars if there was another. I've been using them as my main knives for a year. In and out of the dishwasher, dropped etc and they look like new. Sharpening with a regular stone works well and they stay sharp. The bread knife is the best I've ever had. Small knives have proven to be well-designed knives for chopping vegetables or other occasions where a paring knife works. The yellow blade is slightly serrated, making it ideal for slicing tomatoes. I love the large santoku because its size balances it with the handle, and also because it's sharp, ready to use, and dishwasher safe. He replaced knives worth over $100. I'm not joking. I use it more often. The only knife I have now that isn't in this set, which I use a lot, is a slicing knife that works well for veggies (carrots, potatoes, etc.). An ax or meat cleaver-shaped type used in Japanese restaurants. I've seen these knives go by many different names, but they're essentially thin-bladed paring knives. Adding one more to this set would make it complete.
