Review on 🪵 Heavy Toast American Oak Infusion Spirals by Jamil Fog

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works wonders! in Barsets

I was interested in playing around with the flavor profiles of some bourbons to see what these spirals had to offer. I used half a heavy American oak toast stick in the carafe. My first batch was a bottle of Buffalo Trace. It's a bourbon I'm fairly familiar with, and it already starts off with a relatively pleasant nose, taste, and (though not incredibly complex) finish. Good bourbon all round. There was a tasting party (aka an excuse to drink with friends) and even after a few weeks the nose is more pleasant, the taste is similar to Woodford Reserve Double Oaked and the aftertaste is very smooth. Very nice results but we started with bourbon which I like. I wanted to see what these oak spirals could do, so I took one of my most disgusting bottles and put it to the test. Can this make a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 drinkable? A pretty tough test considering Wild Turkey 101 has an acetone nose, E85 flavor and a 91% isopropyl alcohol aftertaste. In just a week, the results are amazing. The nose is quite pleasant, the flavor is delicious (again, similar to WR Double Oaked) and the aftertaste is much smoother, although perhaps a bit too strong to fully enjoy (think strong rye brandy). Can't wait to see how it matures in a little more time.
