Great and Smoky: Kitchen & Food

Great stuff. 1/5 of the stick was stored in 375 ml Macallan 12 for 2 days. This gave a very distinct smoky/peppery flavor as one would expect from heavy toast. The whiskey also has a more subtle flavor than before, perhaps because the smokiness is overpowering some of the spicier aspects of Scotch. Next I'll try light French oak to add more woody flavor.

Pros
  • Everything is great!
Cons
  • weak

The ONLY problem I had.

The only problem was her size. They were too big to fit in every bottle/carafe I had but one. The product is not to blame. I'm an idiot and didn't read the specs carefully. But they definitely do their job. Note: If you use one of these to mature your bourbon, this is now your bourbon stick. Have you aged some rum? This is your rum stick now. UNLESS you are going to marry scents. I made the mistake of aging the tequila, cleaning/sanitizing the wand and then trying to age the rum. What mistake…

WOW - Great cask aged flavor added to my wine

Every fall I make wine from freshly squeezed grape juice. This is my fifth season and this product has taken the taste to the next level. Since I don't age the wine in barrels, it tastes a bit fruity, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I lack the body that barrel aging imparts. This is a great way to get that body part that my wine was missing. I used 2 sticks per 6 gallon bottle and it tastes great. They provide a pleasant aroma of oak barrels. Friends and family love my wine and so do…

Not Impressed: Kitchen & Dining

This was a replacement for the Medium+ I ordered earlier which did not char or smell. This is exactly the same color, in fact one of the two is slightly lighter than the one from the middle +. NONE of them have anything like the smell or appearance of grilled charcoal. When broken, they are the same color all over, even in the middle of the pith. I think I can burn them myself, but then why did I pay for them? As a side note, since they were a replacement, I used the original Medium+ in a very…

Best quick brew in bar and wine tools

They are much larger than I expected. (Vina herself - a few years ago I bought them on Kickstarter skinny and they fit in a bottle, so it's more than I expected.) They're too big to fit in a bottle, so you'll need a glass or one other containers to "age" them. . I actually bought them to use in vanilla extract. I broke half of a chopstick into pieces and placed in a glass jar along with 16 Ugandan vanilla beans and filled with vodka. This made the vanilla very dark and smoky. If you're using it

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly

No noticeable infusion after 5 days of bourbon soaking

I broke off an inch of American Oak Infusion Spirals - Heavy Toast and added it to a bottle of Porer Man's Pappy (combination 2/3 Maker's Mark Cask Strength and 1/3 Theft). I tried it every morning to note the effect of the infusion and made notes each time I tried it. After two full days of no change in the bourbon, I added another inch of spiral. On the fifth day there were still no noticeable changes. I then switched to the Oak Whiskey Aging Stick (by BattleGround) and noticed a definite…

No noticeable brew after soaking in bourbon for 5 days

at 2/3 the shelf life of Maker's Mark casks and 1/3 theft). I tried it every morning to note the effect of the infusion and made notes each time I tried it. After two full days of no change in the bourbon, I added another inch of spiral. On the fifth day there were still no noticeable changes. I then switched to the Oak Whiskey Aging Stick (by BattleGround) and noticed a definite difference/improvement within 1 day. My conclusion; This product isn't the most effective for adding oak notes…

Works wonders! in Barsets

I was interested in playing around with the flavor profiles of some bourbons to see what these spirals had to offer. I used half a heavy American oak toast stick in the carafe. My first batch was a bottle of Buffalo Trace. It's a bourbon I'm fairly familiar with, and it already starts off with a relatively pleasant nose, taste, and (though not incredibly complex) finish. Good bourbon all round. There was a tasting party (aka an excuse to drink with friends) and even after a few weeks the nose…

Toasting My Bourbons in the Midwest

If you're looking for these toast bourbons, there's a good chance I recommended them on the Facebook group we're in together. A friend at the local bourbon club gave me a sample of Michter's Barrel Strength Toasted and I really liked it. The realization that I could never find my own made me very sad. A few weeks later I was at a local gourmet supplier and they had a new product called Oak and Eden Toasted Bourbon with a wooden spiral inside. Bottle. My gears spun and I landed on Revane looking
