I didn't want them to be too tight for my son so I ordered 11-12 years ago. (He is 9 years old and about 75 pounds, 52 inches tall). He's not on the swim team, he only gets chafed when he buys the lining of traditional boxing shorts, so a friend suggested these. Although this size fits well, they were a little roomy at the waist and I was afraid they would sag when wet. But I (and he) liked the product so much we let them grow and ordered the next size down. It's the real money, although it hasn't been tested with water. Although I do like the quality. The thickness and construction are similar to the Land's End rashguards he swims in, which stand up well to the chlorine and saltwater seasons in summer. Although unlined, they are thick and hold their shape to remain discreet (not too tight around the crotch and buttocks).
