Paper quality is decent, smoother. The ink/markers will likely bleed through between pages without anything, but I haven't personally tested it. The pages turn well enough. In my case, that's not a problem, but this isn't a notebook to throw in your pocket and take with you. It's cardboard backed on both sides for general protection, but it's quite thin cardboard and the plastic (or plastic-coated metal I think) spiral binding doesn't hold the pages in place, the pages are peeling. With this mat you need to work on a flat surface. I was looking for a rug of this size. Happy with it for the price I paid and the above issues will not be a problem for me personally.
