Review on ๐Ÿšฒ Pro Tire Kenda Slant Six by Jeremy Choi

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great REAR TIRE for dry and rocky terrain Good FRONT TIRE

This is my third Slant Six tire. This one weighed exactly 700 grams. I am planning to use this new tire on the rear of my 29er hardtail, I also bought a Kenda Nevegal 2.2 for the front (830g). I will review this tire once I have driven it a few miles. I currently have Slant Six tires on the front and rear of my bike, they have lasted about 1.5 years riding 2 or 3 times a week in the Arizona desert. 90% trail and 10% road to get to the trail. We have a lot of rocky terrain, loose soil and sand. Initially, the rear wore out faster than the front, so I rearranged them a few times to compensate. 1.5 years longer than I expected, after the first few months they wore out quickly but lasted which surprised me. I use my tires with tubes and around 30-35psi (I'm around 180 with gear and hydration pack) and sometimes get spikes or goat bites but no pinching. I've mounted these tubeless tires on Stans (on Mavic wheels) but the tubeless thing isn't for me. The tires did a good job when riding tubeless, but I didn't adjust to it very well. Too dirty and I never felt comfortable. I think the rear tire on the Slant Six is better than the front, so I'm going to try Nevegal this time. I was slipping at the front and losing traction on fast or downhill corners. Also, my brakes easily overwhelm the grip of the tire during quick stops. Although I think some of the problems I've encountered with this tire are related to the 2.0 size. A slightly larger footprint (wider tire or lower psi) might solve this for me. In the rear, however, this tire was great! Despite the smaller studs, it withstands technical climbs very well. If I stay in the saddle and shift my weight back, the tire never spins. It seems to roll very fast and offers excellent rear brake traction. I bought my first set of Slant Sixes to replace the Specialized Fast Trak clinchers that were stock. In terms of weight, I immediately noticed a difference to standard tires. These clinchers were heavier (about 830 grams worn, I never reweighed them) and this affected acceleration. The Specialized tires lasted much longer for several months, but it's hard to tell how many miles they still put on. As I cycle more and more, I now ride 15-25 miles instead of 1-5 miles originally. I can't comment on how this tire behaves in the mud. The other tires I considered were the Conti Race. King and/or Trail King. They appear to be good value for money but ultimately I don't think I would be more comfortable with the Slant Six as the rear tire. So I decided to stick with what I know! Especially at the price you can find Kenda tires for.

Pros
  • Very impressive
Cons
  • boring packaging
