Overall I am happy with this product. The kit comes with two identical sanding belts, which is very handy if one breaks. However, the abrasive belt quality is only suitable for sharpening a knife, not for shaping. The instruction manual recommends using a 20 degree west guide for shaping and repairing the knife, and it's a little odd when you use 17 degree guides to keep your knives sharp. A 20 degree rail is included in the retrofit kit. I bought an aftermarket kit and found all I needed was a blue strap with a 17 degree guide. The blue belt is more logical and can shape my western knife. I could order extra straps instead of the whole set as not only do I not have Japanese/Oriental knives but I won't be buying them for the kitchen so I don't need extra guides. I'm hesitant to return the upgrade kit and I might do so and buy an extra set of straps instead. I suggest the seller update the user manual and provide a more reasonable recipe for shaping the knife. A 20 degree guide permanently changes a knife's blade and forces you to support that knife with a 20 degree guide, rendering the 17 degree guide that came with the machine useless. Convince me otherwise! Three stars because the instruction manual is misleading and because you can't call the seller directly and have to leave a message to have someone call you back.
