Great paper but poor binding

I really like this paper. I can paint wet-on-wet with watercolors, and paper is great for that. It also works well with gouache. The only problem is that the binding is broken (pictured) and I've only used 2 pages so far and only done it once. View of a tear in the binding. It technically uses the Smyth-Sewn method with a decorative headband (which is good for a sketchbook), but it cuts off some corners. The thread used to sew the signatures is fragile and breaks too easily when I pull on it. There is glue on the back but it's not stuck anywhere or it's trying to stick to a white sheet of paper but it doesn't work (usually the back is glued to some strong and porous fabric so it's reinforced). And then the decorative mesh is glued to the adhesive on the back with a piece of double-sided tape and can be easily removed with a tug. I secured the binding for now by applying PVA glue to the spine to attach the spine to the paper. It's the stitching of the covers but such a shame to have a sketchbook with such amazing paper that has such a fragile binding.

Pros
  • Albums and notebooks
Cons
  • Big and bulky
