Review on πŸ“ƒ High Speed Document Scanner ADS-2000 by Brother - Black by Francisco Russell

Suitable for small to medium-sized jobs

I've had the device for two months now. It's light, fast and very versatile. I found two issues that may be important to some potential buyers. First, the scanned sheets slide from the bottom front of the device onto your desk or wherever you place the device. Therefore, you need to create enough space in front of the machine for the sheets to lie flat as they come out. My old scanner, Epson, had a basket that stacked scanned sheets so there were no problems with sheets sliding off the table onto the floor etc. But the Epson was also a lot more expensive. The second problem I encountered was related to the software. Both the Brother Utilities ControlCenter4 software and the standalone PaperPort software that come with the scanner are good for small scan jobs but tend to fail when scanning multiple pages in high-resolution duplex mode. When scanning a 30-page, two-page document at 600 dpi, repeated "Insufficient memory" or "Device not connected" errors occurred, requiring the scanner to be cycled off and on again. The software just can't handle the RAM for large amounts of work. However, after several days of climbing Brother's support ladder, I finally contacted an experienced representative who showed me that scanning into Adobe Acrobat (not Reader but the full Acrobat program) eliminated this problem. Acrobat is simply more reliable than Brother's software when it comes to storage. Since I normally only use the scanner for creating PDFs, it works great for me and I figured the ADS-2000 would be the keeper. Users who don't plan to scan long double-sided documents will probably never encounter this problem (I'm using Windows 10 x64 with 32GB RAM).

Pros
  • Resolution up to 600 dpi (optical)
