Chicken is the only flavor our 11 year old Calico will accept. It doesn't go well with seafood. I've put a little of each on the tip of my tongue and haven't noticed much of a difference, but cats can be adamant when something hits their head. She developed lameness fairly quickly, which the vet X-ray diagnosed as the onset of sudden hip joint deterioration/arthritis. I was surprised that such a relatively young, domesticated and otherwise healthy cat could contract ::boom:: this disease without warning. But that's a few things. Any animal lover knows how terrifying it is to see your beloved pet limping, whether the ailment is minor or severe. Unfortunately, some smart, strong-willed kittens can respond to any change in their daily routine and/or diet by acting silly. Our chintz did this for several months, refusing to approach various chewy things, powders secretly stuffed into favorite canned food, other liquids, etc. The more we tried, the more she stood and refused to eat if there were any gave, or medication . their food. The other cats had no problem with all of these interventions and happily came over to eat her food as soon as she left. So flavor probably wasn't the whole issue with chewing and the like. As with humans, all animal-based glucosamine/chondroitin joint procedures must be taken daily to build the joint and begin repair. Unfortunately, the days passed when Miss Stubborn refused any treatment. And of course he hobbled back. She still loved herself, loved her knees, and after dinner she pretended nothing had happened, even though she was limping. Welcome to the difference between determined cats and frivolous dogs that can be bribed with any treat. She was more receptive to this Liquid Vet treatment, but the seafood variety was never warmed up. I resorted to circling her once a day or every 2 days to give her 2 dropperfuls (10mL) of liquid seafood orally. Yes, it went well. When the bottle ran out I ordered chicken like hell. She either likes the taste or she started feeling sorry for me and will now give in. I add a teaspoon to her morning doses (ours gets 1 serving of canned food and 1 serving of dry food daily) and she *agrees* to eat it. She's hungriest in the morning, so we made a truce. She saves face and gets enough daily for increased range of motion/comfort, although she really should be taking an additional 5ml per day. It is what it is. Who knows, maybe one day she'll get up and decide to take another 5ml after the tug of war. If you're stubborn, try to spot any joint problems early on at the first sign of lameness. We did exactly that and despite months of drug fiddling it was like trying to get an obnoxious toddler to eat his peas - now he's in good shape, can jump on any chair or bed, playing again and doesn't seem to do it for any discomfort. I'm also glad that only one of our cats developed arthritis. I have had cats for decades, all foster orphans and feral cats. All became cute, affectionate only at home, and most of them lived almost 20 years. Despite the fact that they were endowed with experience and sufficient feline intuition, hip joint deterioration turned out to be a simple, but very complex disease. * We also supplement this liquid glucosamine with cat milk protein gummies (duralactin) and capsules sprinkled with food to help with inflammation.
