We bought one of these to try on our reconnaissance and wildlife viewing day trips - and we love it - especially the ability to get up close to come focus. It weighs only 2.1 ounces in a suitcase and takes up little space in a backpack. The strength of the seven is the maximum most people can handle due to the shaky grip (that's 8X). An 18mm lens only gives an exit pupil of 2.6mm (18÷7) at this magnification. This corresponds very well to the pupil diameter of the human eye in daylight, but at night it is about half the diameter (i.e. 1/4 of the area) of the human pupil. For evening/night use you will need a 35mm or larger 7x lens, but then it will be much larger and heavier. For the price paid and the design meant for the day I don't think you can beat it.
