Decent quality pencils but almost no skin tones

So I'm a little nervous about posting my work but here it is. I have attached 2 different models so people can compare the Sargent brand to the more expensive and higher quality brand. The model with the ponytail was drawn in Polychromos. The dark-haired model was drawn almost entirely with Sargent Art Supreme pens, a box of 72 colors (almost because I used a white gel pen for highlights in her eyes and on her nails, and I also used a Prismacolor blender). The set contains 72 pens. The box itself is a sturdy metal box with two removable plastic trays each holding 36 pens, a bit flimsy but ok. The set has what I would call a definite rainbow palette, most of the colors are very bright/vivid with very few neutral tones. Overall I would give these pencils a 3.5 over a 4 only because of the extremely limited range. You would think that with 72 colors you would get more than the 4 skin tones available i.e. beige and brown. There are a few that look like brown but turn out to be too red when dyed. Too many greens, oranges and really bright colors. The set is really limited when it comes to neutral or natural colors, especially grays and browns. I had a really hard time shading this piece and ended up using a graphite pencil for the dark grey. I think they had more in mind coloring books when choosing a palette for these pens, I agree, I love my coloring books but was dying to try them for portraits. The quality of the pens is actually pretty decent, but they don't have a blender (Prismacolor works great). I have Faber Castell Polychromos, Prismacolors and other high quality pens, but I'm always looking for something new. I think they are worth the price, definitely a step above school/student level. They color very evenly and have a decent amount of pigment for the price. Where they don't suit me is in a very bad range of browns and skin tones. There is a slight tendency to clumping with dark colors, but honestly my polychromos do that too. All in all, if you're looking for a really decent yet affordable pencil set, I think they're definitely worth the price. I just want them to get rid of some greens and add some neutrals.

Pros
  • Best in the niche
