Review on Voigtlander 17.5mm f0.95 Nokton Lens for Micro Four Thirds: Ultimate Low Light Performance by Freddy Hammonds

Revainrating 5 out of 5

An unexpected new favorite lens.

I have to say that before this lens I preferred 25mm for most shots but now at 17.5mm which offers a wider angle I find the Voightlander a much more versatile lens. I'm in no way a pro as you can see from my photos but I love the handcrafted nature of this lens. I feel like I understand the relationship between shutter speed, ISO, exposure and aperture much better now that I have the ability to manually adjust my shots for the best lighting. It takes amazing night shots. The photo of the clouds on the beach at night was taken at 10:30 p.m. I had ISO 3200 and the shutter speed was reduced to 2 seconds. I didn't believe the picture when I saw it on the Lumix G7 LCD. It wasn't until I downloaded the photos to my computer that I was amazed. This lens was a keeper. I have 2 minor complaints. First is the weight. The lens weighs 1.2 pounds. It's damn heavy for an MFT lens. Especially since I'm used to clear glass weighing 1/5 that weight. Secondly, this is the vignetting of the lens with an open aperture. Distortion is minimal at 1.4 but still noticeable. Properly considered, these two defects can be characteristics. The weight speaks for its solid construction and perhaps vignetting is a desirable effect on some shots. It's hard to recommend people to buy. I wasn't sure I would keep this lens after realizing how heavy it was. But after a few shots, I realized I wouldn't get this kind of low-light performance with anything else. The costs are quite high. And I say if you want to stay within the mft sensors. Just buy and try. The Revain return policy exists for a reason.
