Installation is quick but requires patience and care

If the 'red light' on your RV Water Heater indicates your main thermostat needs replacing. Atwood water heaters have two thermostats - the main thermostat which is set at a specific temperature and a second 'emergency shut down' (ECO) thermostat which is located next to the main thermostat and is set at a higher temperature. If you notice water coming out of your sink or shower hotter than usual, that's a good sign that the master thermostat has failed. When you replace them, you replace them as a set so both are new again. This is a fairly easy DIY project, although they are held by spring tension against a VERY THIN plastic ring that slides under three metal pins. It would be very easy to break these plastic collars when you are in a hurry or impatient. I had to bend the pins a bit to get the installation done, then gently push them back in with the back of a screwdriver. But. Otherwise it's a very easy job (lots of YouTube videos about it). Just take a picture of the original thermostat and ECO wiring and make sure you do the same with the replacement parts. something else. In my case, one of the wiring pins was a spade connector, but here there is a barrel connector soldered to the thermostat. I suspect this is so people don't screw up and put the primary thermostat where the IVF goes and vice versa. Remember. They are set to different temperatures, so you need to set them correctly. Anyway, I also replace the built-in fusible protection when I put new thermostats in (why not? Cheap insurance!), and the built-in protection connects to this pin on the thermostat, so all I had to do was remove the plane. Unscrew the die of the built-in protector and replace it with a cylindrical die. It took me about a minute to get everything done even though I had to buy a female threaded bolt. Either way, they work great and are one of the easiest van jobs you can find. as long as you are patient with flimsy plastic collars!
