I bought a used compensating coupling that had an unbalanced ball installed. The previous owner must have made a sharp twist which then jammed the rod mount into the threaded portion of the ball shank. This deformed the parts and caused some scratches on the friction surfaces. I was able to fix it but unfortunately you have to buy a special ball from the equalizer to prevent this from happening again. I even tried cutting 1/2 inch off the standard threaded shank and it messed up the saw blades. I recommend spending the extra $10 on a shorter shafted leveling ball.
