Review on Siedentopf Research Grade Trinocular Microscope with Enhanced Magnification by Steve Jones

Nice easy to use microscope, some questionable loose parts

I just bought this microscope for school to finish my lab work at home. Since my field of study is biochemistry, I decided that it would make sense to get a slightly more expensive microscope for further use in my research area. I chose this microscope because it fully meets my needs and requirements. I have currently used this microscope 3 times and am now concerned about the quality of the microscope. The immersion oil lens sleeve that indicates which lens is straight is very loose. I'm concerned that because it's so loose it might damage the immersion oil lens by rattling the sleeve. There were a few other components, like the grip and the rotating parts of the lens, that made me worry they weren't designed properly, as they loosen up after a minute of use. This could potentially be fixed, but as I'm not a lab equipment technician I don't know where to start to properly troubleshoot these issues without damaging the equipment. For the money I spent on this microscope I definitely didn't expect it to be top notch equipment but I was at least hoping that the quality would be much better compared to cheaper microscopes but I was concerned that I could have paid almost $150 more for a microscope of the same quality as $50-100 for entry-level children's microscopes for which as a full-time student and full-time worker every dollar counts, especially when buying hundreds of dollars worth of research quality lab equipment sold on the fall below par at the end.

Pros
  • Assembled microscopes
Cons
  • Cord is shorter than other picks
