As I looked at my cable TV bill, I noticed that cable company Optimum was charging us a $10 monthly modem rental. I just checked out the cable company supplied modem at my house and ordered the same make/model (Arris TM1602A) to replace it. After I switched modems (it's easy: cable, plug and phone jack) and had my cable company activate the new modem, everything was fine and the service was the same. Businesses to activate the new modem through their phone service, but at least we're saving $10 a month later, giving that modem a payback period of less than a year. If you want a similar replacement I would suggest checking with your cable company before spending any money to make sure it is cost effective. The first person I called from the cable company told me that the exchange was not possible and that the $10 fee was non-negotiable. This was only after I insisted and showed a screenshot from their website saying customers can provide their own modems to save on the regular fee. They helped me set it up. Much luck.
