Review on Brother Scanner DS 720D Scanning Lightweight by Steve Guillen

No ICA driver means limited functionality on Mac

I saw that this scanner is compatible with the latest version of macOS and got great reviews. But when I started using it on my Mac, I realized its main disadvantage: this scanner doesn't have an ICA driver and it can't be recognized by Image Capture or other applications that interact with it. It has a TWAIN driver. But macOS uses ICA with Image Capture and none of my applications use TWAIN. Any scanning or document management application (paperless, etc.) only interacts with ICA scanners - the DS720 simply does not appear as a source in these applications or in image capture. (My HP LaserJet All-in-One is listed as the scan source.) This means that only the DSMobileCapture application can be used with this scanner. So you can scan to a PDF or an image and then import it into another application, but this requires additional steps. Also, OCR doesn't work with DS720 PDFs in other applications (OCR seems to work much better when the same document is scanned from HP). It can be an accident, but it happens often. Conclusion: without an ICA driver, this scanner requires me to use its limited input application, save to a folder, then import into Paperless or other applications, and then input metadata that OCR doesn't recognize. In contrast, my HP (ICA) allows me to scan directly paperless and OCR collects a lot more metadata. I didn't know about the differences between TWAIN and ICA, nor that the scanner is macOS only. I see there is a table on the product page that clearly shows the ICA drivers for Brother's more expensive sheetfed scanners only. I wish I knew what that would mean. The DS720 has received great reviews so far and could be a good fit for you. However, be aware that using this scanner might be more of a hassle than it's worth if you're using the latest version of macOS, IMO.
