I have 2 different models of round dehydrators and have had several others in the past. There was a time when hard times happened to us and we dried everything we could and that was really a blessing. Venison, dried cabbage and carrots for soup, dried okra for gumbo, a dehydrator is great if you hate to throw away your food. I just always had round ones and hated the fact that they were round because it seemed like a waste of counter space. The fact that it's square and has a timer is really the biggest advantage it has. It works, but I wasn't too impressed. It definitely has a temperature range for cooking vegetables and meat. It's just that the trays are closer together, so it's best to work with very thin slices. It's great for veggies, carrots, cabbage, and other small items, but large chunks of beef jerky end up in the top basket. Shelves could be deeper. Also, the racks really need to be rotated to evenly dry something like beef jerky or tomatoes. It's good for carrots, catnip and basil. The house will stink, but they all will. Because of this, I love drying herbs in it, although it works great. If you really don't need digital controls, the round popular models hold a little more and the trays are a little deeper. In fact, when it comes to drying, it's not the "heat" that's so important, it's the airflow.
