Because it's square in shape and has rubber (or other rubber-like material) on the sides, it's easy to fix on a flat surface, making it easy to find the right angle to sharpen a knife or other tool efficiently. with all 4 star reviews this is because it's a bit chunky and as mentioned above you can't sharpen a jagged edge. 5th star for own purposes and needs.
