I've had one of the alternative surface pens (because $35-40 are a lot easier to swallow than the $100 I've usually found them for), but they just don't go anywhere in terms of comparisons. The button is populated and supported natively on Surface computers and can be associated with multiple functions. The pen is round with a flat side (sometimes it looks round or hexagonal in the pictures), feels good in the hand and the writing feel is very natural. Other pens I've tried have hard tips and give a very crisp "plastic on screen" feel, surface pens have a softer rubberized end (and a functional eraser) which is more like using a hard marker. Bluetooth works, but it looks like it should work for several years each time, so it's not a problem.
