There are sure to be better filters out there for a lower price but I can't find anything with the same performance as these Subaru filters

As cheap as other well known brands (Fram, Mobil, Bosch etc.) , but I can't find any other filter with the same properties. On the downside, even at an aggressive 15,000 miles per year and according to the 5,000-mile oil change schedule listed in the owner's manual, it's less than $20 a year, so risking another filter can't be justified. Then consider that the dealer will charge you $60 to $70 for an oil change and that the low cost is easily justified.
