Best Disappointment in Video Converters

I love the idea of screen sharing over Wi-Fi and it's a good first step, but I have serious criticism of this product . From the factory, this device acts as its own hotspot. The instructions instruct the user to download the client for Windows or Mac (I downloaded both on my two tested devices). I followed the instructions to connect the Mac using the default hotspot name shown on the screen I connected via HDMI. The app said I needed to connect to the WiFi network hosted on the device (I was connected). Tried restarting the device and restarting my Macbook, didn't help. Repeated the same procedure with Windows SP. Same problem at first, I was connected to StarTech Hotspot but the program couldn't find the device. I restarted the device (press and hold to turn off), it restarted. My SP reconnected automatically, I was able to see and share the screen. The resolution is limited to 1080. Aside from the physical presence of an HDMI port, I'm not sure why they bother to have HDMI when the screen resolution is VGA quality. That was the first surprise and disappointment. With screen sharing, you can share your desktop or a specific file. It has VERY simple drawing, no control over cursor color or line width. It's less useful than using MS Ink, which is already built into Windows, so I think it's disappointing in terms of markup capabilities. Back to Mac even if SP is running. I disabled it and just couldn't get the nScreen software on the Mac to see the device when it's in the same hotspot. Back on the SP, I went to the nscreen web interface and reconfigured it to use my access point. This went without any problems, I connected my SP to my access point again and now I could have internet, network and nscreen access at the same time (desired end state). Let's go back to the Mac - nothing has changed. I don't know what the problem was with the Mac software implementation, but it is clear that it is related to the Mac or its application. I see no way it was a wifi issue and it's clear I got it working on the windows side. Due to Mac issues, low resolution, and useless drawing in general, I was disappointed. Quality and speed were no better than the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter. I have no doubt that StarTech will answer what is wrong with my Macbook (nothing). While I hope they fix any Mac software issues, the low resolution means it's no better than any other VGA solution out there.

Pros
  • Make sure your HDMI or VGA display supports wireless video
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors
