You get what you pay for.

These shelves definitely fall into the 'you get what you pay for' category. The hinges aren't as tall and the tubes aren't as thick as Thule or Yakima racks. The way it attaches to the crossbars isn't as secure either, and there's no easy way to attach the racks to your vehicle. The gasket is quite flimsy and the hardware looks like plated steel rather than stainless steel so they will rust over time. Due to the shape of the clips they will not attach firmly or directly to the factory cross members on our 2001 Toyota Sienna. The straps that come with it are very flimsy and I wouldn't trust them. Still, they cost a lot less than fancy racks. We bought a pair of CargoLoc crossbars from a local sporting goods store and everything snaps in nice and secure. This was a bit more difficult to achieve, but we still ended up with much cheaper stands than premium brands and they are strong enough for our use. Even if we replace them every year for the next five years, we'll come out cheaper than the premium brands. If you want a perfect fit right out of the box, if you want roof racks that attach to your car, if you want a roof rack kit that will last ten years or more, shake your head and buy one of the premium Brands. Now if you need something cheap and are willing to put in a little effort to make it work, they will probably work just fine.
