Review on Tekonsha 90195 Electronic Brake Control by Sonny Nevers

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Everything is ready for our journey!

Tractor: RAM 1500 Hemi Lonestar Crew Cab Parts Used: Tekonsha P3 Proportional Brake Controller purchased from Revain $151.45 The 2016 Ram 1500 Hemi Lonestar did not come with an integrated brake controller. After searching all the RAM forums and reading Revain reviews, I settled on the Tekonsha P3 controller and didn't pay the $440 my local dealer quoted for an OEM setup. There is currently a video on YouTube showing the full length removal of the center console to install the OEM controller, but even then the dealer still needs to flash the computer to get everything working together and all functions on one screen above steering column. Some people are fine with that, but I chose the Tekonsha path myself. I knew I wanted a clean and minimally invasive setup, so it took a bit of thought to fit it to my center console. To mount the controller, you must have enough space to tighten the screws on both sides. Instead, I used the two very thin diameter toggle bolts I had spare, threaded them through the controller bracket with washers, bolted the controller to the bracket, threaded the thin bolts through the pre-drilled holes, and unscrewed the fenders under the dash with it some washers. It may not be the ideal way, but it has worked great for me. All I can say is take this idea and improve it. :) I would like to add that before I started my project I looked under the dash for two factory plugs wrapped in foam tape. They literally just hang there and are easy to find. This made it as easy as assembling a controller, plug and play. The whole installation took me about 30 minutes because I was careful. After installing it, I noticed that there is no on/off switch. Back to reviews and forums I went. It turns out there's some controversy over whether or not it goes to sleep. In my case I checked after 20 minutes and the screen was blank as shown in the picture. Starting the truck or touching a button will wake him up. Some reports from others are opposite and the controller stays on. In any case, the power consumption of the device is so low that it will take months before the battery is empty. Setting up a controller for your trailer is pretty easy. In terms of functionality, I'll get it working for our 7600lb travel trailer next weekend. Just follow the instructions and you will be fine. Hope this helps and safe towing! ***UPDATE*** I can't think of a single complaint about this controller. Everything works consistently as it should and is easy to set up. I've attached a photo of the trailer we picked up on our way to Galveston when we stopped to pee. Gotta love Bucees! I started with buff at level 3 and then reduced it to b2. There's plenty of juice in trailer brakes with power-ups set to where it works best for us at the moment.
