I used to clean my 3 gallon bowl with a turkey washcloth but it took forever to sift through all the gravel and remove 25% of the water. I didn't know they made such small gravel suckers but I was so happy to find this! Now it takes me about 15 minutes for a weekly water change. This is the perfect size for 2-5 gallon aquariums. If you have anything over 5 gallons I highly recommend getting a bigger vacuum as the nozzle is very small and it takes a long time to clean. A few tips: The instructions are very clear, but I had a hard time using it for the first time. First, if your arms aren't a mile long, you'll need to shorten the hose. I have an aquarium on my desk and a two gallon bucket on a chair on the floor. I measured from the pipe in the water to the entrance of the bucket (the bucket should be under the aquarium) and cut off there. This minimizes kinks in the cable and allows me to rest my finger on the end of the hose. Before use, I recommend passing hot water through it for a few minutes. This cleans it and helps get rid of creases. To start the vacuum yourself (as instructed in the instructions) you will need to pump the end up and down quickly to get the water flowing. Then you MUST keep the rhythm, don't stop or pull the siphon out of the water when you put it on. Don't finish it because if you stop it will be very difficult to start it again. Move it up and down on the gravel to remove debris, and if you want to slow down the water suction while cleaning, simply place your finger on the end of the hose and the outlet valve. After you're done, I recommend rinsing it thoroughly with hot water. water and adding a small amount of vinegar from time to time, hold your finger over the end of the tube and run the hot water and clean before removing your finger and washing off all the vinegar. This will help clean it thoroughly. Overall, this is a great product for small aquariums that makes water changes a lot quicker and easier.
