very quiet, no hum, just no hissing. heats up very hot, so hot that we have decided it is not safe for our home due to cats and visiting small granddaughters. Yes, the sides help keep it from getting too hot, but the top still gets very hot, as do the cracks for a cat or child to get their paws/fingers into. Set at 80 degrees, the sides emit 145 degrees of heat and the top of the oath 195 degrees. I checked it again later with my anemometer and it was about the same. it radiates pleasant, not dry heat, which appealed to me about this heater, because in winter i have problems with my sinuses and excessively dry air causes sinus migraines. Think if you don't have small kids or cats this would be a nice nice heater for you BUT not as good as dr. Heating or Young Living heating! they are much better for me.
