White Label Drives / Generic Drives = Refurbished Drives

All the white label drives I received worked, I ran a lengthy surface test just to make sure there were no bad sectors and read speed and records were accurate. what is expected of mechanical drives. These drives are usually remanufactured by major drive manufacturers, but they put their own label on the drive. Drives as they no longer have a valid standard warranty. Both drives I received were Hitachi HUS724030ALE641, these drives were released around 2012/2013 and had a 5 year warranty at the time. These are corporate drives, so they must have corporate components. If you want detailed specifications, you can just search Hitachi Ultrastar 7K4000 pdf on Google and get more information. I bought a refurbished hard drive of the exact same model because it was cheap back then and that was before refurbished hard drives were on the market. .Plus points of converted "new" hard drives: 1. They come with a 1-year warranty from the seller and non-refurbished drives come with a 60- or 90-day warranty. Not only the actuators have to be checked, but also the mechanical components have to be checked or at least replaced. The motor had to be re-lubricated or replaced to keep the hard drive running for years to come. Disadvantages1. No documentation unless you know what an OEM hard drive is and look it up yourself. 2. You rely on the seller for warranty claims, not big manufacture.3. Power consumption may be slightly higher as they have older technology. The only complaint I have with these Hitachi drives is excessive writing and reading, the drives are noisy and vibrate like the old IDE (PATA) drives on my old computers. I've had new Toshiba and WD hard drives that were quieter and didn't vibrate as much as those Hitachi drives. The reconditioned one I brought back a few years ago has run over 36,000 hours to date and is still working well. I expect these drives to offer me the same reliability or even more. This will be my first experience of the universal "new". hard drives. Time will tell how long they last.

Pros
  • Pretty impressive
Cons
  • boring packaging
