Review on Dell 15 7590 with Intel Core i7 9750H Processor and a Bright 400 Nits Display by Wiktor Barczuk ᠌

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I like everything, the quality is good, the price is acceptable.

For my work (software development) fits very well. I would like a more comfortable touchpad and a matte screen, more USB ports, Ethernet and a second m.2 connector. Power Limit is strictly set by the manufacturer, the processor frequency has never been raised above 4.6 GHz. And the logical question is, why then overpay for i9? Downvolting to -020220V managed to avoid temperature throttling, but it didn't help much with resetting the frequency. The frequency still drops under load, but now due to power throttling. Modern Standby won by editing the registry, switched to S3. But now the monitor does not always turn on when exiting sleep mode (they say Dell has some kind of bug with S3). Once I did not fall asleep and warmed up in my backpack. I take it out, and he yells with fans and you can get burned on the aluminum case. About skipping letters when typing with a built-in keyboard. Perhaps it's a matter of habit. But neither my old 8-year-old Samsung, nor the relatively new MacBook Pro with its latest generation butterfly keyboard (which is very short-throw and, in my opinion, quite comfortable), I had no such problems. I advise you to check before buying whether it is convenient for you. Palmrest has rather sharp edges. My hands are uncomfortable. But the MacBook is even sharper, and even there is aluminum, and here is a soft touch. Opening the laptop is inconvenient - there are no recesses or slots. Can't open with one hand. Wi-Fi fell off once. Those. Wi-Fi disappears altogether, does not see any access point and restarting the computer does not help. I pressed the Wi-Fi button, it did not help. :) I downloaded and installed different versions of drivers from the manufacturer and Wi-Fi did not appear. The complete demolition of drivers from Killer helped. By the way, if you decide to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch, secure access to the network: either stock up on Wi-Fi drivers (Windows 10 is not included in the delivery), or connect an external Ethernet (it does not require drivers). After Windows finds the Internet, it will install all the necessary drivers on its own.

Pros
  • 1. Performance (I have a Core i9 model, 16GB, 512GB). Fast processor and Toshiba NVMe hard drive. Not EVO, of course, but not bad either. There is a discrete graphics card, but it doesn't matter to me, I don't play or work with 3D graphics/video. 2. Autonomy. My model has a large 97 Wh battery. It takes about 6 hours (in fact, I have not yet reached full discharge, but I think it should be enough for a working day). 3. Appearance. It looks decent and expensive when closed and not bad (but not so good) when open. 4. 4K IPS screen. Very bright, contrasting, rich colors. But there are drawbacks (below). 5. Keyboard. I like and dislike her at the same time. PgUp / PgDn / Home / End on the arrows is a plus for me. The missing numeric keypad is emulated using Fn+letter keys, though not labeled on the keyboard. 6. Thin and quite light with such characteristics. 7. It is said to be capable of 130W when charging over Thunderbolt, which exceeds the Thunderbolt Power Delivery standard's 100W limit. I have nothing to check. 8. Thank you for leaving USB-A and a card reader. Despite the fact that 5 years have passed since Cook's statement, there are still very few devices with Type C. I use an adapter and would not say that it is convenient for me. 9. The camera was moved to a standard place, in the previous generation it was at the bottom. 10. There is an auto-adjustment of the brightness of the display under the illumination. 11. Ability to upgrade RAM and SSD. 12. The build quality is on par with MacBooks. The body is rigid.
Cons
  • 1. Overheating. The processor gains 100 degrees in seconds and only then the cooling system turns on. That is, he is good at a short distance, but surrenders at a long distance. 2. Modern standby. The laptop in sleep mode lives its own life, receives and voices messages from instant messengers. It's annoying at night. 3. Keyboard. The keys require pressing at a certain angle, because of which, with the ten-finger typing method, some distant letters are skipped for me. No digital block. 4. Touchpad. I expected more from a flagship model. Very small compared to the MacBook Pro. Pressing requires a fairly tangible effort, and the cursor often goes astray. But you can click the old fashioned way, with a touch. 5. Display with FRC. Pixel flicker is visible even in 4K. I did not expect such a setup in this price category. 6. 3 USB ports (one of them Type C) in my setup is not enough: external keyboard, mouse and USB headphones, and you can’t plug in a flash drive. Bought a dock. 7. No Ethernet. Probably a few are critical, the dock also helped me with this. 8. Power indicator on the cable. The idea, of course, is cool, but it shines brightly all the time, it interferes at night. I sealed it with black duct tape. 9. The charging indicator on the laptop (front) is bright and non-switchable. The instructions say that the Fn + . key combination switches this indicator to the hard disk access indication mode, but it does not work. The disk access indicator in modern models is already dying off, unfortunately. 10. On the side there is a battery percentage indicator, I used it a couple of times, the button is inconvenient. 11. Coil Wine. Loudly audible in the BIOS or at boot. Sometimes it appears briefly during work, the rest of the time it is, but very quiet. The sound is as if the computer has an HDD, not an SSD. It doesn’t bother, but it’s worth writing about, especially since the MacBook doesn’t have this close. 12. Glossy reflective screen with a touchscreen. Good brightness partially compensates for glare, but the anti-reflective coating is so-so. The touchscreen, as for me, is superfluous in laptops.
