My parents bought one of these because they really needed an old school style pencil sharpener. Once I was visiting her on vacation and didn't take my pencil sharpener on the plane as it uses razor blades, so I had a chance to use it. This thing is AMAZING. It sharpens well, very quickly and correctly so the leads don't break out of the wood with any type of pencil (expensive Berol colored pencils, hard lead drawing pencils, super soft graphic pencils, you name it). Since then I've bought two, kept one for myself and given the other as a gift, then told all my designer friends about it and everyone loved it. Some of the negative reviews are related to the suction that doesn't last. In my experience we only suck when sharpening and then release it. It has never given me any problems. I don't think it's designed to lock up in suction mode. So if that's what you're looking for, you might prefer the hinged model.
