No configuration. Truly plug and play. The ideal solution for the transition from copper (Ethernet) to fiber optics. I've used two of these to provide surge protection for extended ethernet connections after hearing stories of induced high voltages leaking into the ethernet and destroying attached devices. For about $100 (the cost of two such devices plus a fiber optic patch cord), this breaks the copper connection and prevents power surges from being transmitted down the Ethernet cable. Fiber optic cables only transmit light, not electrical energy. A connector on an Ethernet cable can destroy a media converter, but it's a lot cheaper than replacing half a dozen computers connected to a switch powered by a long Ethernet cable.
