The best wifi hotspot you can get for the price Don't buy this for your home unless you're really good at networking and don't know instructions follow, read manuals and don't use google to help you (first time). In addition to this device, you need a POE injector or a POE switch. They sell another model without the E at the end that includes a POE injector. You will also need a Unifi Cloud key or install the software on a computer that preferably works 24/7 to manage the device. Requirements apart from some things you get with this device1. Reliable stability. I've installed these units in very large warehouses and the great thing is I don't have to go back and ever have to reset them because they fail. They just work and work and work. I'm trying to make sure they restart when I see they've been on for over a year, but they don't seem to crash.2. Ease of use of 5 GHz DFS channels. If you're in a crowded apartment, you might not have open channels on the standard 5GHz bands. These devices allow you to use other channels that you can see with some people when running a wifi scanner. There are some strict requirements that must be met and these devices will scan for radar signals when using these channels. But now that most consumer routers come with 5GHz channels, using channels that nobody else is working on helps a lot with speed when you're on the lower end of the signal strength range. Of course, in the middle of a large warehouse you may not see other signals, so this is not necessary, but I see congested airspace for those living in apartments permanently.3. Looks quite nice if you can lay the cables yourself. It looks like a cool smoke detector in my house as I routed the wires so it's on the ceiling. If you just put this on a shelf next to your router, it probably won't look as pretty. Disadvantages 1. As mentioned earlier, it is more difficult to set up and takes longer to install. I'd recommend getting a cloud key to make setup easier, but then you'll probably want a POE switch as well. Also, if your router sucks and fails, these devices won't go out, but of course if your consumer home router fails, your WiFi won't work for internet use. So you might as well invest in a Unifi security gateway as it doesn't seem to fail. Such a big spend of money to get what you need to set this guy up properly and have a stable environment for him. 2. The view is not designed to stand on a shelf. That's not a problem, but it's like putting a smoke detector on a shelf. It's designed to be ceiling mounted so attaching it to a shelf still works but doesn't look right in my opinion. However, some people may not want to run cables all the way to the ceiling, or I suspect most people won't.
