Five Stars: Ladder Racks

This is an addendum to my original April 2015 review of this pickup rack. I first installed this rack on a Ford F250. The stands are fully adjustable and can be fitted to almost any compact, medium or large pickup truck. I installed the racks by drilling holes in the pickup body rails, but they could be installed with pickup clips. Personally, I felt more comfortable with a permanent nut and bolt installation. Installation is fairly easy and can be done by anyone with a power drill and basic hand tools. Actual installation time was approximately 2.5 hours. In my opinion the paint applied to the struts is of poor quality and I suggest you paint the struts with a good quality paint before installing them on your car. I painted mine before installing it, but within a few months of installing it, spots of rust began to appear at the joints of each bar. I am attaching the photos, I recently decided to trade in my F250 for a new car and ended up removing the luggage racks. During the removal I discovered the cause of the rust spots on the joints. When I installed the posts it turned out they had enough points for water to drain from inside the posts. However, none of the baseplates had actual drainage holes, causing the vertical sections of the studs to fill with rainwater, which seeped into the joints and caused rust spots. The solution to this problem is to drill a 1/8 inch diameter hole in the bottom of each base plate in the vertical rods. This allows rain, snow and other condensation to run off and prevents rust stains on the joints. Drilling holes before repainting the studs will prevent rust from forming around the drain holes. I reinstalled the struts on a Ford F150 and they fit both the F150 and F250 equally well. Since the uprights were riddled with rust spots around the joints, I repainted them before reinstalling them and after drilling drainage holes in the bottom panel. These frames are designed to support up to 600 pounds. I've used kayak racks every winter on trips of about 1200 miles one way. They are great for transporting kayaks, although loading kayaks is difficult for the average person. I've hauled 12-foot wood on racks and raised the 600-pound weight rating a couple of times with no problem. or other long items with your truck even if your truck's platform is short. The price is reasonable, the seller shipped my order quickly. The only issues I've found with the posts are the poor quality paint they come with from the manufacturer and the lack of drainage holes in the base plates. However, given the overall quality of the shelves and the reasonable price, I would still rate the shelves 5 stars as a person would have to spend significantly more money to get a better shelf. A few words about assembly: Floor plates on thick steel posts. I used 4 different 3/8" bits to drill a total of eight holes for the posts. I would advise having some 1/8" bits when drilling the drain holes in the base plates. On my vehicles, I had to carefully place the base plates on the bed rails to ensure I had enough room to mount the base plate to the underside of the bed rails.
