It took me more time than I'd like to admit to get this to work with my Raspberry PI 3B. In the end, the solution turned out to be quite simple, but not obvious to a Linux newbie like me. The first thing you need to know is that this screen seems to be directly inspired by the Waveshare RPi LCD(A) 3.5 inch screen and uses the same drivers. (which are available on the Waveshare wiki). I used the instructions above with a small but important change to the driver files. Because I used the Noobs installer to build the Raspberry Pi image, my boot partition was different than what the drivers expected. The default is root=mmcblk0p2, but my device was configured to use mmcblk0p7. Before I knew it the drivers were reloading in a kernel panic, but after I updated the setting in cmdline.txt to use the correct boot partition everything worked great. Once launched, the screen is fairly sharp and bright enough for the resolution. The touchscreen works just as well as any other capacitive touch device (mediocre), but it's fine for my needs.
