The protrusions on the underside are sharp. They will not cut, they will prick, and there are so many of them that there is little room to hold and not prick during installation. Although uncomfortable, this means they hold your rug well and don't move at all. They are cut exactly to fit very well. I like that the dirt comes off easily unlike a standard rug. I installed mine just before the first big snow of winter and the only downside I have is that unlike the carpet which absorbs water as it is rubber the snow melts and my water pools in the channels , and this does not seem to evaporate even after prolonged heating at full power. I think that's to be expected, but I don't know if the manufacturer expects you to have to remove the floor coverings to pour out the water every week or two.
