It works like a timer, you physically turn the device to set the step for the countdown timer. But it should also have a clock/alarm function. Well, it turns out that every time you set the timer, it pauses the clock and resets the audio settings. So the clock is VERY off, for example you make a good 15 minute timer, now the clock will stop for 15 minutes and when your timer is up the clock will continue from where you started the timer. An unfortunate design flaw, but few people buy this because they need a different watch. It's also a pity that the default volume is a very loud, shrill beep. You can halve it if you set the alarm (again, it's weird that that's the only way), but after you turn on the countdown timer, the alarm and sound settings reset. For example, it will continue at maximum volume. All in all an imperfect design, but it serves its limited purpose. However, don't rely on more than one egg timer.
