So, like most of my impulse buys, this device was just another really cool techno toy, similar to an Archos pocket AV recorder, which I haven't used except one either MP3 player. But on my way home from work the day I bought the Roadmate 700, I was driving down a road that was closed due to a serious car accident and had to detour into unfamiliar territory to try to avoid the accident . Each residential street was clearly marked on the map, and even before the turn I knew if that street led to me or if I was going to a dead end. Most of them were dead ends so when I got to the stop sign I decided to zoom out a bit and plan my route. circles in this residential area. I wish I could have touched the screen to tell the GPS the road was closed so it would stop telling me to do the first legal U-turn, but once I strayed far enough from my original route, it did recalculated my direction to take me to my daughter's kindergarten on time. As much as I hate to admit any weakness, I'm missing a directional gene, so I'm glad there's a replacement now. And my husband likes it when I don't have to tell myself the way on the phone 2 seconds before the light changes. The day after I bought it, he called me en route to make sure I knew how to get where I wanted to, after dutifully printing out MapQuest directions and commenting on the "best" route ahead of my trip . I just told him I didn't need his help anymore. A bit sad for him, but very liberating for me. After 2 days of ownership I am very happy with my purchase. Yes, it's very expensive, but as I got lost or at least a little worried about my orientation, at least once a week when trying to navigate country roads and find shortcuts, it pays to have a calm head . .Now if they could just link to Traffic.com and a speed camera detector.
