Review on Toko T14 Digital Wax Iron by Junrey Jewel

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Solid and accurate on wax

I have this Toko T14 for shrinking aircraft fabric so temperature control and accuracy are important to me. The device I received was the (correct) US version. Since there are several reviews here that swear by the temperature control, the first thing I did was measure the temperature myself. Note. I've seen several reviews here that said their electronic non-contact (IR) thermometers read low temperatures and they assumed they had faulty units. It's important to realize that unless you have an IR thermometer that can be set to different emissivities, it is NOT accurate in this regard (simple, non-settable IR thermometers are only accurate for measuring opaque surfaces - not bare ones metal, silver, reflective surfaces) . surfaces etc. See https://www.flukeprocessinstruments.com/en-us/service-and-support/knowledge-center/infrared-technology for more information). I realized this immediately when I set my toko to 135°C (275°F) and read about 116°F with a cheap non-adjustable IR thermometer I was sitting around with. I pulled out my multimeter, connected a Type-K thermocouple and, using a little force, pressed the end against the base of Toko's iron. The displayed temperature stabilized at around 276°F, indicating that the temperature reading on my T14 was accurate. While the device itself feels solid and well-built, the temperature dial feels pretty shabby, with a sort of "ratchet" feel that feels uninhibited and inconsistent. It feels like it won't last as long as the rest of the device. Another problem is that if you set the temperature, let it stabilize and then lower it to a lower level, the green LED will light up showing the temperature is good and that's the only sign you're pleasing are . what you chose is when it will turn on and off again at that new temperature. So it's more like "the temperature is at or above your chosen value" than "the temperature is at your chosen value". By not keeping an eye on it, you can easily burn something, unaware that it's a lot hotter than intended.
