I started farming fish as a kid in the 70's and they were standard in your goldfish tank back then. My 55 gallon tank has a canister filter as well as a sponge filter. but was at a loss as to what to use in a 5 gallon betta tank. I'm a bit tired of HOB filters as they can get stuck, esp. after a power failure. And if they are put out of circulation for a while, they can become poisonous. Also, there's an issue with the intake that can accommodate the smooth fins, which would require a sock. The sponge filter felt a bit unwieldy and most filters take up too much space in the tank. Then I found this and it's just perfect. I like that it has space for and comes with a bio medium. I could replace the pebbles with a more porous medium like sintered glass (Eheim) for faster and better bacterial growth. Don't forget to fit a check valve on your pump to prevent backflow/draining in the event of a power failure.
