When I unpacked the package, the first thing that struck me was how durable this tool is! It's really built for heavy use and seems able to handle harder terrain and heavier people than me. But I had serious doubts that the plugs would come out of the metal tube as easily as in the picture and when I read the instructions I saw that there were instructions on what to do if they didn't. Well I was amazed at how well it worked! The tube has a slight taper from top to bottom. So if there is a peg inside and you turn it over, the powder coating will make the peg fall out. The troubleshooting instructions apply to cases where you loaded the entire tube from the bottom up. Since I was only making a few dozen bulbs and needed to find six inch deep spots free of rocks, I turned them over after each candle. But I can see where, if you had a commercial grow bed, you'd want to get cork after cork at a time, then dip the bulbs into the holes, and then turn it upside down to pour out the contents of the tube. This may require tapping or using a running hose. The instructions say not to put a stick in as this will compact the soil, but I've found that if the cork doesn't come out right away, a gentle nudge with the stick is enough to reward a cork. The two rings provided also work due to the gradual narrowing of the tube. The 4" deep has a narrower diameter and the 6" deep is slightly larger so it slides a little further up the pipe. I am amazed at how difficult it has been to plant bulbs by hand in the past, especially ones that had to be 6 inches deep, compared to how easy it was with this tool. I will enjoy planting many more bulbs next fall!
