I bought this for a one time project based on some of the reviews I saw on youtube for the model 55 with pilot arch. I understand this is a budget purchase, but after 10 minutes of use it won't start an arc. Knowing it was a contact launch I kept the ground and torch on the BARE CLEAN metal but it still didn't cut. Sent it back and bought a unit twice the price but with a pilot arc. I would say that a pilot arc is necessary when you are cutting something that is not pure metal. The pilot arc ignites on rusted and painted metal.
